Breathing Space is HOOT’s specialist Arts for Dementia service which provides fun, engaging and accessible activities that someone living with dementia can enjoy with their family member, partner, carer or support worker. Being creative makes us feel good and has proven benefits to mental and physical health and wellbeing.
Who is it for?
The Breathing Space service is open and free to anyone who is a Kirklees resident (i.e your council is Kirklees Council) and:
- In the process of obtaining a diagnosis of early stage dementia
- Already diagnosed with early stage dementia
along with a family member, partner, carer or support worker.
“We enjoyed it, it gave us something good to do together”
What are the creative activities like?
Due to Covid-19 restrictions we are unable to meet as a group as we usually would so instead; we are offering Breathing Space from Home, starting with a booklet of 5 weeks of accessible and enjoyable arts activities delivered to you. The first booklet contains visual arts and creative writing activities that you can do together with things you are likely to have in your home. The activities will encourage you to revisit favourite stories, songs and creative skills and explore new and exciting ones.
You’ll also receive regular phone calls from Breathing Space’s Creative Support Worker who will check in on how you are both doing.
I’m not a singer/painter/musician!
All the creative activities are designed by professional community artists and you need absolutely no artistic or musical experience to enjoy them. Art forms can include music, singing, creative writing and visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpting).
How do I sign up?
