Loving Dewsbury: A Community Art Celebration at the Town Hall

An art piece created by local residents highlighting specific landmarks and personal memories of the town is being exhibited at Dewsbury Town Hall.

The artwork is part of a project by hoot creative arts, an arts and mental health charity that runs free creative arts workshops to help people look after their mental health and wellbeing.

Inspired by the impressive Victorian architecture, Grade II* listed Minster and the town's textile heritage the aim of the project was to look at Dewsbury through new eyes with a positive focus.

The project's lead artist, Sally Barker said "We started by getting out into the town and walking around, taking time in particular to look closely at the fabulous architectural detail of the buildings. As we explored the streets, participants shared their memories, experiences and the history of the town whilst taking photographs and sketches."

Using carbon paper, the residents traced their photographs and sketches onto wooden sheets before adding colour with paint and watercolour pencils. Each piece is decorated with patterns on the reverse and hung vertically from a rail to encourage people to walk round and see the work as sculpture.

Residents who took part in the workshops said "We are very proud of this work as a beautiful and positive statement of our hometown"

The work is available to view in Dewsbury Town Hall reception from Monday 29th June 2026 during the Town Hall's usual opening times.
